Children’s Eyecare
Our family-run business is proud to provide children with the highest-quality eye care possible, ensuring that their vision is as bright as their futures.
The Importance of Children’s Eye Tests
As up to 80% of a child’s learning is absorbed through their eyes, poor eyesight can affect their learning and development in the classroom and on the playground.
Thankfully, regular exam examinations can catch any eye problems or vision impairments as early as possible so that proper treatments can be put in place. Treating vision changes or eye conditions early ensures a better outcome for their future vision.
Common Signs of Eye Problems in Children
According to statistics, up to a million children in the UK will return to school this year with an undiagnosed vision problem. This is because children often don’t realise that they have a vision problem. Rather, they assume that what they see is ‘normal’. Not only do undetected eye problems impair a child’s development and learning, but they can also potentially lead to attention or behavioural issues, and even vision loss.
Common signs of children’s eye problems include:
- Frequently rubbing their eyes or blinking
- Actively avoiding reading, writing or drawing
- Regular headaches or discomfort
- Concentration, learning or behavioural problems at school
- Holding reading material close to their face
- Trouble catching a balls
- Squinting when reading or watching television.
Your Child’s Eye Examination
We recommend bringing your child in for their first eye exam at the age of 4. That said, if you have reason to believe they may be experiencing problems with their vision, bring them in as soon as possible, no matter their age.
Regular eye exams are recommended at least once a year for children under the age of 16. NHS eye exams are free for children aged 16 and under, and for those aged 18 and under who are in full-time education.
While we understand that eye exams can be overwhelming for children, our experienced and friendly optometrists are here to help your child feel as comfortable as possible. The exam is conducted according to your child’s age and capabilities. For example, if they are too young to read or talk, pictures or other tests can be used to detect vision problems.
Each exam lasts approximately 30 minutes.
